The KNOWAtlanta Cultural Arts Primer:

Like many of you, when I first moved to Atlanta, I was somewhat overwhelmed. Sure part of it was all the packing and loading that had to occur, but part of my frustration (and I'm sure you're experiencing similar frustration), is that even once you have your gas and electricity turned on, your cellular number memorized and your commute etched into memory, learning the city is by no means finished. Not only will attending a cultural art event provide a break from the unpacking of plates and stemware, but it will force you to learn the streets of the city -- on top of all that, you can see some of the culture that Atlanta has to offer. With that in mind, KNOWAtlanta magazine offers the following cultural arts primer:

7 Stages

This theatre is located in Little Five Points, a haven for the artistic-minded. 7 Stages brings together artists from all levels (music to theatre, local to international), and the result is a theatre with thought-provoking plays.
14th Street Playhouse

The 14th Street Playhouse (14th and Peachtree) is part of the Woodruff Center (see listing) and features a main stage with seating for 400. Numerous companies perform at this location, including Jomandi, ArtWithin and Theatre Gael.
Actor's Express

Actors Express describes itself as "a wildly eclectic mix of classic and cutting edge plays." Productions are held at the King Plow Arts Center.
Art Within

Art Within started as weekly writer's group in 1995. It's become a forum for new scripts and some great theater — productions are held at the 14th Street Playhouse (see listing).
Alliance Theatre

A professional theatre in residence at the Woodruff Arts Center with both plays of classic and contemporary styles.
ArtScape

ArtScape is a downtown art festival held each fall in Woodruff Park; this ticketed event ($3) is a product of The Atlanta Downtown Partnership and features music, art for sale and places for kids to "do art."

The Lowdown: The 2000-2001 season brought Carmina Burana, Romeo and Juliet, and of course, The Nutcracker. The last show of that season is this May with Peter Pan.

The Lowdown: Big-name shows at the Fox Theatre are part of the Atlanta Broadway Series, which is bringing "Annie Get Your Gun," "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas"and "The Phantom of the Opera" this year.
Atlanta Jazz Festival

150,000 jazz and music buffs come out for the 24th annual occurrence of this free weekend concert series at Piedmont Park and for the headlining, ticketed event. Scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend.
Atlanta Opera Center

Classy opera presented at the Fox Theatre includes such shows Verdi's Otello, Falstaff and Il Trovatore. Other events, including an antique fair and opera introduction evenings are available.

The Lowdown: The best of popular music. The Atlanta Symphony also sponsors the annual Decorators' Show House tours; this year's home was a $9.9 million Buckhead mansion.
Callanwolde Fine Arts Center

The Lowdown: Created from old Coca Cola money and located in the old Coca Cola estate on Briarcliff Road, Callanwolde features some of the very best of up-and-coming local artists. A recent exhibition featured the color photography of Dorothy Gautier.

The Lowdown: Located in Midtown, this non-profit puppetry theater and permanent museum offers a chance to view some of the world's leading puppeteers, as well as enjoy hands-on exhibits of puppets from around the globe.
Decatur Arts Alliance

The Lowdown: The Decatur Arts Alliance hosts the Decatur Arts Festival, a small town arts festival with big city sensibility. The Artwalk part of the festival is a tour of downtown galleries and other inspired stops; the visual arts exhibition features multimedia art; a literary arts segment touts the art of words, and in the recent 2001 event (held in May), a film festival was part of the show.

The Lowdown: A beautiful Arabic-styled theater on Peachtree in the downtown area, the Fox is synonymous with grandiose shows that the entire family can enjoy. Whether it's music or a play you want (The Chieftains and "Annie" are part of the recent offerings list), the Fox will fill the need.
Georgia Ensemble Theatre

The Lowdown: Georgia Ensemble Theater produces passionate, often nostalgic theater, near the heart of Roswell. All productions are at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center and theater/dinner packages are available.
Georgia Shakespeare Festival

The Lowdown: The Georgia Shakespeare Festival is a professional theatre in residence at Oglethorpe University. Shakespearean works for the 2001 season include As You Like It, The Winter's Tale and Julius Caesar.
High Museum

The Lowdown: With a fantastic permanent collection and amazing run of touring exhibit, the High Museum is the name for seeing fine art. The museum also hosts membership organizations where arts lovers can meet.

The Lowdown: Horizon Theatre Company "breaks a leg" in Little Five Points, a funky little area just minutes from downtown. The plays are sometimes irreverent, sometimes serious, always something that you probably haven't seen before.
